Why choose equine assisted therapy as opposed to regular room
based counselling? For some people with complex mental health needs, for example; those who have experienced trauma, talking therapy can be distressing or intolerable. Equine-assisted mental health services has grown out of the need for improved treatment acceptability and is a viable alternative to traditional room-based therapy. We aim to inspire and empower individuals through connection with horses. We use an integrated trauma informed approach that incorporates equine assisted therapy, counselling, body based awareness, mindfulness practices and horsemanship Horses & Mental Health: Why horses? Horses by nature are prey animals, making them extremely sensitive to environmental activity and people’s emotional states. Horses are large and powerful, having the potential to allow people explore fear and other feelings which can be translated into real-life situations. They can also help put people at ease and support people to feel accepted, because they’re unbiased and non-judgmental, responding only to people’s approach, intent and behaviour. Horses will give feedback to the client by moving towards the client or away from them, and a whole host of other non-verbal communications, behaviours and responses. Horses are social animals with their own individuality, and are most willing to interact when people are engaged and work to build a relationship with them.
